What Will I Study
Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Systems Maintenance (City and Guilds) - full-time course, one year
For candidates wanting to develop some of the key skills and understanding in motor vehicle systems. Successful candidates will learn the basic skills needed to apply for an automotive apprenticeship or similar engineering pathway. This qualification covers a variety of automotive related areas, including vehicle engine systems, lubrication systems, fuel systems, vehicle electrical systems, braking systems and steering and suspension systems.
Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles (City and Guilds) - full-time course, one year
This qualification is aimed at those who would like to develop practical skills and understanding in motor vehicle systems. Successful learners will have acquired the key skills and understanding to apply for an automotive apprenticeship, allowing them to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the automotive industry.
Levels 2 Diploma in Accident Repair MET Principles (City and Guilds) - full-time course, one year
On completion of this course, candidates will have a qualification that shows employers and customers they have the skills required to carry out paint repairs to and refitting of mechanical and electrical components as a result of accidents and will be able to progress into employment.
Level 1 7290-10 Certificate in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles (City and Guilds) - part-time course, one evening per week (3hrs)
This qualification is aimed at adults (19+) who wish to understand the fundamentals of vehicle mechanics. It aims to develop your understanding of basic servicing and repair (college vehicles only). The course will cover multiple subjects, including servicing, brakes, electrical and tyres.
How Will I Be Assessed
All units will be assessed using both theory exams and practical assessments, which builds a portfolio that will need to be completed in full to achieve the qualification.
All units will be subject to mandatory formative assessments set as milestone targets and must be completed throughout the course.
If you are age 16-18 and have not achieved English and Maths GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, you will be required to attend Maths and English lessons alongside your course.
What Will This Lead To
Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Systems Maintenance
Completion of this course allows candidates to progress into employment or onto the Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles. This may also lead to employment in the automotive industry.
The Level 1 qualification could help you get your first job as a tyre fitter. By achieving higher levels, you will gain the skills to start your own tyre fitting service or car valeting business.
Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles
Completing this course shows employers and customers you have the skills to work in a range of jobs, including in a specialist repair workshop or with vehicle fitting specialists.
At Level 2 you have already developed a good foundation of skills and knowledge required to become a vehicle service technician and are ready to move to the next level. You could become a car valeter, a light vehicle/heavy vehicle/motorcycle service technician or a FastFit/tyre technician.
At Level 3, you have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge and looking to gain more responsibility by supervising others, running your own business or moving to a diagnostic technician level. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. You could become a light vehicle/heavy vehicle/motorcycle diagnostic technician, a FastFit supervisor or run your own business.

Min GCSE grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English Required for:

Full time Level 3 Course
4 GCSEs at Grade 4-9 including English AND Maths (Functional Skills Level 2 English AND Maths will be accepted).
NOTE: If you want to study Applied Science you must have 4 and above in GCSE Biology, Chemistry & Physics.
Vocational Level 2 in the subject area you wish to study plus Grade 4-9 GCSE English or Maths (Functional Skills Level 2 English or Maths will be accepted).
