Your name: Charlie

What course did you study at University Campus Oldham? BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care

Why did you choose University Campus Oldham?

I was studying the Access to HE Diploma (Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Professions) at Oldham College and my sessions were on the UCO campus. I had initially been considering nursing as a career path, but when a Health & Social Care tutor from UCO came into class to tell us more about the qualifications available, I really liked the sound of the modules on the BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care

What were the highlights/stand out moments from your time at UCO?

The support I received was a highlight. I really don’t think I would have got the same  support at a larger university. An example of this would be the Disability Adviser supporting me to pursue an ADHD diagnosis through my GP.

Academic skills also supported me to structure my assignments and Careers helped with my job search and CV.

Did you complete any placements as part of your course?

I completed placements through my employer, which meant that it was very easy to build up my placement hours.

What are your next steps?

I recently secured a role as Housing Support Worker. I am looking forward to gaining experience in the sector before progressing into wider roles. I think this role will help me to find out what I enjoy and I can build from there.

How has attending UCO helped you achieve your career goals?

The learning at UCO has increased my confidence and professionalism. I can handle situations non-judgementally and can work with tenants who have high-level needs. I am using the theory I have learned and applying it to my practice every day.

What advice would you give to someone considering UCO?

Be proactive and always ask for the support you need, when you need it. When there were times that I was struggling, everyone was always on hand to help me.
