What course did you study at University Campus Oldham? BA (Hons) Education and Early Years

“Education was something I never thought I’d get back into, but UCO gave me the confidence and support to take that step.”

Why did you choose University Campus Oldham (UCO)?

Education was something I never thought I’d get back into. When COVID happened, everything stopped and I had time to think. I decided to go back to college to get my GCSEs and then I heard about University Campus Oldham through my sister. She kept saying she could see me doing the course, so I applied, not expecting much.

When I met the tutors, I could tell straight away how supportive they were, so I enrolled. It was a big step for me, but it felt really personal. The support was tailored to me as a mum and my health at the time. I probably wouldn’t have studies at university-level if it weren’t for UCO.

It’s a place where you feel welcome, especially if you’ve got responsibilities, anxiety or you’re not sure degree-level study is for you. They really understand and support their students.

What were the highlights of your time at UCO?

I was able to bring out my creative side. I took that into my teacher training placements, doing displays and cooking with the children and that all started at UCO. My mental health also improved a lot while I was there.

One module that really stuck with me was about teamwork. I learned how to understand people’s strengths and how to work together positively. I still use that now in my job. It’s one of my biggest strengths.

Did you complete any placements?

Yes, and they were a big highlight. In the second year, I did a specialised placement that pushed me out of my comfort zone. I didn’t want to do it at first, but it made me more confident, especially when going to new places and experiencing new settings. That still helps me now in work. I’m confident going into any setting.

Placements also helped me build connections. I formed a great relationship with a school, which led to more opportunities including teacher training. Finding my own placements also helped me build confidence speaking to people and creating professional relationships, which I now use every day.

Did you receive support from other teams?

Yes, wellbeing, academic support and careers all helped me. Careers supported my application to Prestolee SCITT (a school-based teacher training programme) and academic skills helped with my dissertation. I said I wanted a first-class mark (over 70%) in my dissertation and with their support I got 74%. Those skills have stayed with me through my PGCE (a postgraduate teaching qualification) and into my career.

What are your next steps?

While studying at University Campus Oldham, I volunteered with Home-Start, supporting families with young children and helping prepare children for school. That meant a lot to me because inclusion and diversity are important to me. As someone who didn’t grow up speaking English as a first language, I saw my own parents struggle and I’ve always wanted to give back.

I’m now a Diversity Co-ordinator at Home-Start. This role is a huge achievement for me and is helping me grow even more in my career.

What advice would you give to someone considering UCO?

If I can do it, anyone can. I have four children and my youngest was only two when I started, but I stayed engaged and started to realise I was capable.

Don’t let barriers stop you. There is support and UCO will support you every step of the way.
