Oldham College recognised at Pearson National Teaching Awards

8th April 2026

Several of our staff have been recognised at the Pearson National Teaching Awards 2026.

These awards shine a spotlight on excellence in education, recognising the fantastic work that happens within colleges and other teaching communities across the country.

Oldham College has been recognised in the following four award categories for 2026:

Outstanding New Teacher of the Year
Sam Taylor, Programme Tutor for Brickwork – Bronze Winner Status

Sam draws constantly on his real-world experience as a professional bricklayer to create a ‘purposeful, calm and professional’ workshop environment. One learner said that Sam “makes it feel real…he makes you want to do it properly.”

Sam has also revolutionised assessment practice at the College through designing and implementing a digital assessment tracking system, allowing learners to access their live progress data and view tailored, skill-by-skill feedback.

FE Team of the Year
Step into Education team – Highly Commended Status

The Step into Education team provides critical, life-changing support to learners who have struggled to engage with traditional educational pathways, often due to social, economic or personal barriers.

Through tailored support, meaningful community-based learning and vocational experiences, the team demonstrates how inclusive education can overcome structural disadvantage.

Transformational Use of Digital Technology
Assistive Technology team – Highly Commended Status

The Assistive Technology (AT) team has led a college-wide transformation in how digital technology removes barriers to learning. AT is now embedded across the curriculum, giving learners the support and confidence they need to succeed.

One learner shared that, thanks to AT, “For the first time, I can read my exam paper on my own. I don’t feel different anymore – I feel capable.”

The team has also trained 230 staff through structured CPD and demonstrations, spoken about AT on a wider scale – including being featured on BBC Click and co-delivering at the 2025 AoC SEND Conference – and much more.

Unsung Hero
Rachel Mason, Connect Me Team Lead (Step into Education) – Certificate of Achievement

Rachel works with young people at risk of disengaging from education and has left a lasting impact on many members of our community.

She sees early signs that others may miss and her impact is often found in small but transformative acts that help to keep our learners in education.

Her work has been described as ‘consistent, compassionate and life-changing’.

Simon Jordan, Principal, said: “We are incredibly proud of the staff that have been recognised at the 2026 Pearson National Teaching Awards.

“These awards reflect our dedication to our learners, and to ensuring they fulfil their potential during their time with us. Receiving this recognition also highlights the importance of the wraparound support offered at Oldham College – and the lasting impact that prioritising learner achievement can have.

“Congratulations to Sam, Rachel, the Step into Education and Assistive Technology teams!”
