What course did you study at University Campus Oldham? BA (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice

Stacey graduated with a Top-up BA (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice, and is now working in her dream role as a Probation Officer

Why did you choose University Campus Oldham?

I chose UCO because it was close to home and wasn’t a large university. I had previously started a course through distance learning, but didn’t find it supportive enough for me.

My cousin attended UCO and when I saw they offered a Criminology course, a subject I had always wanted to study, it felt like the perfect choice.

What did you enjoy most about studying at UCO?

Having small lectures allowed me to build a great relationship with my tutors and peers. This made the experience more personal, and the learning felt student led – which increased my motivation and helped me to do better on the course.

There was lots of discussion and debate, which suited my learning needs as someone with dyslexia.

Did you complete any placements as part of your course?

My course didn’t have placements, but I worked in a care home throughout my course – which gave me transferable skills to support my job applications.

Did you receive support from other teams?

Yes: I accessed wellbeing support following a loss and bereavement. I also had a child during my time as a student – in both cases I was supported, which enabled me to continue my studies.

I also accessed disability support for my dyslexia and received comprehensive testing, which meant I could apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).

Towards the end of my course the Careers team worked with me on my job applications, which resulted in me securing a role as Probation Service Officer and progressing into the post straight from University. This was the job I had wanted since I was 15, so I was delighted!

What are your next steps?

I am now a fully qualified Probation Officer, having completed my PQUIP in December 2024. I work closely with the police within Integrated Offender Management.

The role is challenging but I am enjoying learning and developing. In the future, I would like to explore moving into a management role.

How has UCO helped you to achieve your career goals?

My initial role in Probation did not require a degree, but my course gave me an understanding of why people commit offences. This perspective informs my non-judgemental practice. The course gave me knowledge and insight into what I wanted to do with my career, and confirmed my aspirations.

What advice would you give to someone considering UCO?

100% do it! UCO has a very supportive atmosphere, everyone is welcoming. I was treated as a whole person, and there was always understanding when I had personal issues to deal with alongside my course.
