Your name: Esther
What course did you study at University Campus Oldham? BSc (Hons) Psychology
Esther graduated with a BSc (Hons) Psychology, which has helped her progress into her current role as a CBT Therapist
Why did you choose University Campus Oldham?
I chose UCO because it was local – I lived in Oldham and had children attending schools in Oldham, so it fitted well. I was returning to education and UCO offered a foundation year, which meant I could ease back into academic study.
What were the highlights/stand out moments from your time at UCO?
The tutors were so welcoming and supportive throughout the course but I appreciated it even more in my final year. I had a dissertation to complete and this was the first time I had done research on this scale. My tutor came to the library to support me, read through my work and reassured me when I felt overwhelmed.
Did you complete any placements as part of your course?
We didn’t have placements as part of our course but my tutor advised me to get experience in the sector. I secured a role alongside my degree of Leaving Support Co-ordinator in a step down mental health service.
I had no experience in the sector so this was really important in terms of learning about the practical application of theories and concepts, and also gave me the experience I needed to secure my role as a trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner.
Did you receive support from other teams?
The Academic Skills team helped me improve my academic writing. They gave me prompts to help me develop, and feedback on assignment drafts. All of this support really helped me to progress academically.
I also accessed Careers support the year after I graduated, following eight interviews for the role of trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner. I was near to giving up and making this my last interview, but with the advice I received on how to approach the interview I went on to be offered the job.
What are your next steps?
I am aiming to progress from CBT Therapist to High Intensity Therapist and I have chosen to work for a private company, as I feel progression will be quicker to my next career goal.
How has attending UCO helped you achieve your career goals?
Getting my degree got me on the right path. I initially wanted to be a Child Psychologist but I found out about other opportunities including Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner and this broadened me ideas about psychology careers. My time at UCO and my degree have also helped in my personal life, as now I understand behaviour so much more and can respond to situations calmly.
What advice would you give to someone considering UCO?
UCO is a good campus. It’s very supportive, welcoming and open. Even If you think you know what you want to do, you will gain new ideas. Advice from my tutors that there are no stupid questions and that rejection is redirection are wisdoms that have stayed with me.
